On June 26, 2010, Cindy Wickizer was presented with a rare award. Only six individuals have previously received this honor. This is the text of the comments I delivered during the award ceremony at the Washington State RBA Convention banquet. The award was a secret until it was presented and these remarks should be read with that in mind.
"I am here on behalf of the ARBA to honor a long time, pioneering, energetic leader in our district. Newcomers know her primarily as a judge. Involved youth know her as a tireless supporter and encourager. Those of us who have been around for 30 plus years know her as an energetic, visionary leader of the ARBA...
She joined the ARBA in 1969. She has been active and is experienced at every level of the hobby. She is still active locally when many are not--recently instrumental in reviving her local club and continuing to be very involved in youth activity.
She has been and continues to be a tireless promoter of the ARBA. She is an involved advocate with legislative issues that affect the hobby. Did you know that she is a past member of the Board of Directors of Women of Vision; a United Nations organization and, sponsored by that group, traveled to Russia to present and monitor 4-H rabbit projects? She has been instrumental in changing and improving judge's education efforts. She is the past ARBA Youth Chairperson and a past Co-Chair of an ARBA Convention. She is a life member of the Washington State RBA and an initial recipient of ARBA's Distinguished Service Award when that award was created in about 1989.
She was inducted into the ARBA Hall of Fame in 1998. There are only 23 individuals who have ever received this honor. She is the first woman elected to the Hall of Fame (there are only two) and is one of only four living members.
She is the only woman to serve as President of the ARBA, beginning in 1989, and she has served as the ARBA President for 10 of last 20 years.
But we are not here to celebrate any of that. This is about something different. This award was meant to be a surprise until tonight, so we could not ask the one person who could help us fill out the information we needed. But, I think we did pretty well.
She received her Judge's license in March 1976. To give you some idea of how unusual it was for a woman to receive a Judge's license at that point in time, consider the context. I had just started raising and showing rabbits a year or so before and it was apparent to me that, while women were making names for themselves breeding and showing, it was still a man's world in terms of positions of leadership - Judges, the ARBA Board, etc. That has changed a bit in the ensuing years and now more than 130 women have Judge's licenses (about 40% of all Judges). But at the time our recipient received her license, only three women had one and none of them were regularly judging at ARBA Conventions.
She has judged in more than 35 states (that is how many we counted without asking her). She has judged in Canada, England, Japan and the first show ever in Thailand. We counted 17 ARBA Convention judging assignments since 1989 - or 17 of the last 21 years, and there are likely more if we could have asked her. My research showed that very few women judged ARBA Conventions before about 1987 - in fact you can count them on the fingers of one hand - underscoring again how impressive her track record is for major judging assignments.
Our recipient has been an aggressive supporter of Judges Education. She served on the committee that put together the first Judge's Academy in 2003-04. She has presented at at least seven ARBA Judge's Conferences since 1983 that we knew of -- a significant honor; you would be hard pressed to find someone who has presented at more.
She has been and continues to be a pioneer for women in this hobby. Whether it is receiving a Judge's license, getting breakthrough judging assignments at ARBA Conventions, promoting and participating in Judges Education or promoting the hobby around the world; she has been and continues to be in the forefront.
Only six Judges have ever received this award before tonight and only one other woman (Carrol Hooks).
...On behalf of the ARBA, for her accomplishments as a Judge, it is my honor and privilege to present a Lifetime Judge's Award to Cindy Wickizer -- a truly deserving recipient of a very rare award."

 Blue Mountain Rabbit Breeders...
We are a group of rabbit breeders dedicated to the promotion of our hobby, bringing more shows to our Eastern Oregon/Western Idaho area and enjoying fun & friendship with fellow enthusiasts. We hope to provide a valuable resource for both those just getting started and the experienced breeder.
How we got started:
While visiting at shows a group of friends recognized a need for more shows in our centrally located area & saw the potential for filling the geographical gap. As most ideas go, a spark was soon fanned into a flame & Blue Mountain Rabbit Breeders Association was formed. We strive NOT to replace any of the great groups in our Northwest, but to be an added resource for our members.
Our goals:
- Bring more shows to our central location.
- Provide support and encouragement to our fellow breeders.
- Promote our hobby and advocate improvement of our breeds.
